Yes, you understand what I mean. The really iconic clubs like the Ironhorse and Shaboo that have legendary artists frequently are not really what I had in mind.

They are wonderful, though.

Doc Watson & David Lindley, on different occasions. In very small places.

From small coffee houses to small auditoriums I've seen; Trace Bundy, Andy Mckee, Antoine Dufour, Erik Turnbull, David Beegle, Kaki King, Phil Keaggy, Tommy Emmanuel...probably more I'm forgetting. Some great shows!

Jorma...maybe 75 people.

Bill Kirchen...maybe 35 people.

Brownsville Station in a small bar. Stunbled into this one.

Aerosmith in a bar...also stumbled in.

Springsteen...the 1/3 of a 7500 seat arena. So, 2500 people or so. Does that count?

Charles Mingus in a health food store...50 people or so.

Lots more

In the mid 80's I saw Dan Hicks perform with two other phenomenal players. It was in a small venue in Portland, Maine, with maybe 20 people in the audience. I went into the gig with great respect for him as a musician. And came out with an even greater respect for him and his mates as professionals. They put on the kind of show worthy of a full concert hall. I felt bad for them. I have done gigs where the band outnumbered the audience. But, I am not Dan Hicks.

Such small venues, and such quality performers:

Jorma and Barry (small dive in Cincinnati)

Jorma and Chris Smither (Big Island)

Laurence Juber (a real coffee shop in AZ)

Eric Bibb (Springfield)

Todd Rundgren (A Capella tour)

Leon Russell and Band (he wasn't having a good time)

In the late 90's I saw Janis Ian in a tiny Coffee House / Restaurant in Westborough, MA called The Old Vienna. It was the most intimate performance (I doubt they were 30 people in the audience). She played solo... very impressed with her guitar playing (I remember she had two small bodied/ parlor Satna Cruz guitars) and, of course, her voice. She hung out after the performance, talked, gave autographs, etc.,
