Very nice! Thanks for sharing. I really enjoy the Elvis version as well as Willie’s. Classic tune and you do it well!

Ya know, stratcat, I like Elvis’ version also. In fact, I pretty much like everything the King did. I came into music about the time he came on the scene, so I grew up with Elvis’s music. He could put incredible emotion into a song, couldn’t he?

Thanks again to all who have weighed in on this. I’m humbled by your kind comments.

Roger

That song fits you like a glove, Roger. It’s not an easy one to pull off and you hit it out of the park!

Thank you, Reeve21. Your phrase “fits you like a glove” resonates very loudly with me.
I’ve heard folks with great voices and wonderful guitar skills perform songs that don’t really fit them, in my opinion. I am certainly guilty of that as well. Wanting to perform a song credibly doesn’t necessarily mean it’s a good fit.

I once did a song at an open mic. I hit all the notes and played it ok, but a good friend said later, “stay in your lane, ‘ol man”. It just wasn’t a fit for who I am and how I sing. We had a good laugh, and I knew he was right. I think of that now when I consider a song.

As I age, my palette seems to be more limited, and the songs that I even want to do are fewer. I think finding ones sweet spot is key. I’m glad you felt this one works for me. I love the song and the story it tells.

Thanks so much for listening and jotting the note.
Roger

A lot of insight in that post, Roger. I quoted the whole thing just to bump it to the top

Looking forward to more from you, us old guys have to keep those good old songs alive!

Thank you RP. I’m glad you enjoyed the song. It is a great song...so well written and expressive.

I was playing at a wine bar a couple years ago and when I started playing that song, one of the waitresses began to cry and ran to the back room. I often wondered what occurred in her history to cause such a strong reaction to a song.
Or....maybe she just thought I sounded awful...

Thanks again for giving this a listen.
Roger

Thanks rokdog49. I am more conscious these days as to which songs work for me and which ones don’t. Not a believer that every singer can (or should) sing just any song...some just don’t work for certain voices/styles, IMO.

I do find the list is getting shorter too. Hmmmmm.

Thanks again,
Roger

I really enjoyed that and agree with the others - this is a perfect fit for your voice. Thanks for sharing.

Thank you, EMTSteve. The list of songs that work for me is static, I think, as the new talent comes on the scene. That’s ok, though, there is some great new talent out there. I appreciate your note.

I agree, that song fits Roger’s voice very well. Willie would be impressed !

Hopefully Willie would think it’s an ok job. I hear that Willie is a pretty down to earth guy.

I had a friend who lived in Texas, his house backing up to a golf course that Willie owned. He said that if you happen to be out in the back yard when Willie is playing a round, he’s very likely to stop for a minute to chat or say hello. Real regular guy.

Thanks for listening, SprintBob. I appreciate your note.

Having read many of the notes above, I have to concur with the consensus. This was a great vocal performance- definitely in your lane (which I mean as a compliment, to be clear)!

Nice picking as well.

Thanks for sharing, well done!

Cheers,

Dave
