I too keep a spare parka winter jacket in my back seat in the winter. I haven't put it in my car yet but the extra large winter boots, toque, gloves, and scarf are there.

For the non-cold weather folks;

Toque, pronounced "chook" is a knit, usually woolen cap, similar to a "watch cap" as featured aboard ship/boats at sea.

I was born and raised among French-Canadian folk and didn't thing a thing about the derivative of this word. Something like "babushka"(A scarf for women) which is a Polish/Russian etc. thing.

Here's one I forgot that's for anyone where there's snow and ice. I think I did it as a PSA here earlier.

You can still buy old school quality wood handle snow brush/scraper and not the cheap crap at most auto part and department stores. A Canadian company makes them. Ryder fleet sales web store sells them. I was great fun to buy a dozen, hand them out to friends and family, and for some get asked how I found an alternative to most of the crap for sale.

And for spontaneous jams and sing-alongs:
* two camp stools
* some song sheet handouts
* banjo - Gold Tone AC1 or AC4 polycarbonate pot $US 220 (carbon fibre guitars are too bulky and pricey)
* musicians gloves if frosty weather

Play on..

I have a few of those but I don't think I have any wood ones. Mine are solid plastic ones. I had a telescoping one before and another one where the brush would fold in half and they were both terrible for our winters. They broke easily.

I checked out the Ryder Fleet sales site but couldn't find any info on buying those. Do you have a url?

Hmm... Looks like Ryder Fleet Products closed in March. My last order was Mallory 203 brushes at $1.21 US each.

Looks like you can still get Mallory 203 brushes but not 6-12 at that price.

That's a great price. Like you mentioned, it's nice to buy bulk and then give some away.

I lived through this and it is a reminder of this topic.......

Shoveling one's roof (ala Buffalo) is a sign of a real BIG storm! You over 60's folk, best to stay on the ground and observe the "flat bellies" doing the shoveling!

I was living in Ft. Drum NY when the ice storm of ‘98 hit. It was quite miserable and created quite some destruction in Watertown and most of Jefferson county. If you live in an area that’s susceptible to harsh winters, then an emergency pack is a must have.

Canadian Tire (a retail chain) stocks a 24 inch wood handled automotive snow brush made by Mallory that looks just like the ones in the photo in this thread. It retails for $4.00 CAD. Get a bunch for Christmas stocking stuffers.

We had a Coast Guard senior officer nearby when I was growing up, and he drilled their motto, Semper Paratus, into all the neighborhood kids. I think the contents of his Blazer’s lockbox could have fed the five thousand, healed the sick, and kept us all warm besides. It was good if intimidating modeling for how to be prepared.

I see tons of people who are woefully unprepared for anything, and it makes me glad to have had that example as a kid.
