John has made me a couple now with awesome spalted maple purfling. This would work equally well, I think. As would the firewood earlier!

Tom, we put a little glue in first really just to set the inlay - not really to fill the slot. Then we fill the excess with black filler. Ebony dust or burned matchsticks set with glue on an ebony fretboard blend well.
