I agree with you -- but I must admit that the recording with the Olson features better playing on my part and better recording conditions altogether.

The Olson does have a sweet and piercing quality in the treble along with a very defined bass. I also like the natural "compression" that seems to be the SJ's trademark.

I can't wait to post some videos of this guitar!

Nice to hear the dry recording......there's certainly resonance to that guitar.
Do you ever comment on your recording set-up? I love the depth of your wet sound...( mics used, programs? plug-ins? external recording gear?) I'm very new to that dept.

And this sounds great. The guitar sounds so wonderfully huge yet very immediate or intimate. Sure doesn't need much added "wetness" from a deep reverb. Thanks for posting.

I have to agree here. I've listened to all the versions of this tune Joe has put up and The Olson sounds far and away the best of them all to me.

Personally, I find too much reverb does not give a great guitar enough room to add something special, and, additionally, hides a good player's touch...

Nice playing as always Mau. I actually enjoy both renditions equally, some parts with the Kraut more and others with the Olson more. What are the tunings used for each - sounds like different keys which does make it difficult for direct comparison.

Anyway, I think you have two stunning guitars here which seem to both excel in different ways without making the other redundant at all. Just my opinion though...

I use an Apogée MiC plugged into an iPad3 and GarageBand. The reverb is the default one, which I set to about 40%.

There is no further processing of the sound. Everything is uploaded directly from the iPad.

I am planning to upgrade to a MacBook Air, Apogée Duet and a pair of condenser mics as soon as the MacBook Air becomes available with the Retina display. The iPad is great and simple -- but having a pair of mics would be so much nicer...

Thank you for your kind words and for your tactful way of approaching the reverb issue.

Personally, I hate the dry version. I wouldn't play traditional blues with a wet signal -- nor would I play Si Bheag Si Mhor and most of the airy stuff without it. That's the sound that I like.

I posted a link to the dry version just so you could hear the guitar without any effects -- and also to show you how the reverb doesn't dramatically alter the tone of the guitar. It's still very much the same tone -- except with a bit of extra colour.

I'm not a traditionalist or a purish, and I don't know that any of my guitars "need" reverb -- but I just like it that way. I've been a guitar player for over two thirds of my life and I don't think I could change my preferences at this point -- nor would I have any reason to do so.
