Illuminating. Interviews with more than 1000 individuals who were involved in the planning and execution of the mission.

Nothing here about Europe, Hitler, and barely a mention of Roosevelt. Instead, it zeros in on the three weeks leading up to the dropping of the bomb - the Los Alamos testing, the crews and scientists that made it possible, Truman's justification for using it, and its impact not only on the Japanese, but on the world.

That narrow focus is what makes it so readable in my opinion. Call it a "war book" for people that don't read "war books". It barely even mentions Nagasaki and the eventual end of the war. Those would be different stories. It's just that laser-beam focused on Hiroshima.

Apparently, this was a NY Times Bestseller when it came out in 2006. I don't pay a lot of attention to that usually, but I can understand why. It was another well researched and really good book by Mr. Walker. Highly recommend it.

I just finished this, based on your recommendation.

What a terrific read. Based on this, and "Beyond", I'll be looking for more of Mr. Walker's work.

I'm on a Irwin Shaw (Rich Man, Poor Man) kick. Read a few of his recently.

Just finished The Young Lions which is a wonderful WWII novel, highly recommended.

Dean Koontz's The Night Window. It's the fifth and final book in the Jane Hawk series.

I'm back in Winston Churchill's The Second World War six book series. I had started book five (Closing the Ring) but took a break because these tomes, at 500 pages each are a tad heavy. I read some lighter stuff, including a bio, Ted Templeman: A Platinum Producer's Life in Music. That was fascinating but sad as I watched his life come apart at the end. There was redemption, though. But now, back to the grind stone. Churchill's work has been extremely illuminating.

The Long Walk by Slavomir Rawicz. They made a movie from this book called The Way Back with Ed Harris in it. Polish guy escaped a Russian prison camp in Siberia and walked 3000 miles to India. I think the book is better than the movie.

Dan was a great reporter; and the Celts were a great team during much of my lifetime. I really enjoyed this look at the inside.

I just finished, The Judges List, by John Grisham- it is the sequel to The Whistler- good reads but I do think the Judges List is the better of the 2, both have to be read, in order, to appreciate either-

Also I just last week read, Michael Connelly's new Bosch series, with Renee Ballard in the lead role, The Dark Hours- good story, good read.

I thoroughly enjoy this series. The Jane Whitefield mysteries are based on a Native American (Seneca) woman who serves as a guide to help make people who’s lives are in danger - disappear. Each book is a heart-thumping thriller as Jane and the person she is helping outrun the bad guys. Fast paced and well written.

Just finished Arthur C. Clarke's Childhood's End. Thought provoking 1950s sci-fi.
