Default Martin M21 Steve Earle Model

Years ago Matt Umanov (Legendary Guitar Dealer in NYC) designed a Martin M21 model guitar with Steve Earle. Basically, from what I have read, an M21 with a few things added. Does anybody here own one? Or, has anyone here ever had one? I understand there were only a few produced and they are hard to find now. I would love to get may hands on one of those.

i bought one in 2012. used at Mandolin Brothers in Staten Island. simply amazing guitar. engleman spruce top right? Balanced, beautiful woods, melodic, lush... and yet without the woof of a Martin rosewood dread. they are great guitars.

i sold mine as it was delivered to my house in the death of a family member. i recorded one song in it. but for several weeks whenever i took it out to play, it was just sad.

There were 140 built, if I remember correctly.
I own #70.
Great guitar that I don’t play enough.

I bought one used a few years ago not fully knowing what I had bought. It was a fabulous guitar! It played well and, sounded great, and was beautifully understated. Unfortunately it was larger than I expected or wanted, so I sold it rather quickly.

I have regretted many times selling it and have not had the opportunity to try another one.

And 4 years old, if I’m reading that correctly.

Thanks for your replies. I envy those who have them. 140 is a very small
production run. Still, I keep my eyes peeled. I have always heard they were amazing guitars. Feel free to post pics of that fine guitar, you lucky dogs that own one

You've been sandbagging on these things haven't you? One would think you'd have brought that thing out by now.

It has a blue case - I thought they were made in the 70's and abandonded then

That one stays at the farm, doesn’t go to the type of places that let us in.

If you want to buy one, there's one on Reverb for a low $1500... but it has a few dings. Just the usual... buckle scuff, micro scratches, seven holes from a claw hammer.

The M-21’s were and are terrific guitars. I’ve liked the M-21’s that I’ve encountered more than the M-36 and the other one that they came out at the same time.

I don’t know why, exactly, but I suspect that Martin got in there, then redesigned and improved the bracing pattern and other structural elements.

Because the recent M-21’s that I’ve played have been significantly livelier than any of the M models from the late 70’s and early 80’s that I’ve had a chance to play. Something important got changed during the interim years when they stopped making them for a while. When they brought back those guitars after years of not making them, some change took place. Whatever else it may be, it is a serious improvement and a major benefit to both the guitars themselves and those customers who’ve bought them.
