I thought maybe this one was actually one of Steve Earle's and custom relic'd by one of his ex-wives.

My first horrifying thought was that it was "relic'd" by Martin based on one of his guitars. Nope, just some random guy's wife.

"Fully Functional"...lol! I wonder if that poor thing could be repaired short of replacing the whole top! |

C'mon guys, how much would it cost to have seven custom sound ports added to a guitar? And she did it for free! Octrophonic surround sound!
Steve

Back to the original question (sad to see a guitar smashed up). I had one of these guitars. Italian spruce top if I recall correctly. Very lightly built, great sound and on my list of stupid sales I shouldn’t have made. The friend who now owns it absolutely loves it.

Pardon my ignorance, but is the M in M21 in anyway related to OM as in OM21?

The M models used to be referred to as 0000. They are wider than OMs. OMs are 15" wide while M models are 16" wide.
M models are favored by Vince Gill, Jorma Kaukonen, and many other players.

Arlo Guthrie's favorite guitar appears to be an M-38. And there was a Signature model 0000-28H AG in 1997. I played a current model M-36 in the store. It LOOKS very similar to a 000 body but feels noticeably wider in the lower bout. I was comparing it to the 000-28, and I clearly preferred the 000, but I see the appeal. If a dreadnaught is too big or too woofy, and a 000 is not loud enough or not bassy enough for you it may be your Goldilocks guitar.
