$300 Acoustic Electric Christmas present
A friend wants to buy his son an acoustic/electric for Christmas. Budget is around $300. Anyone have recommendations in the price range?
Thanks |

Look into Alvarez guitars. They are built to withstand some abuse. They sound good. They are easy to play. They can look really nice if you choose the right one. There are several models so look at used on this forum. They are priced in your range and you get a lot for the money. You will receive many more recommendations here and half the fun is in the choosing.

I've heard good things about Yamaha FG820 (dread) or FS820 (small body)... solid tops with scalloped bracing, and enough $ in the budget to add a bone saddle.

Look at Yamahas.
I have owned and gifted several fs800s. They actually have a FSX800c model in your price range. Keep in mind you are not getting “oh my god tone” at this price point, but instead a playable, decent starter guitar. The saddle is plastic, and it’s likely to need a setup to give it low action that a beginner will appreciate. If it were me, I’d double the budget and get a Martin DX2AE. Maybe I have Pollyanna eyes, but I think a beginner will be more inclined to stick with it when they start on a better guitar...like that Martin.

My $299 Ibanez a/e dread with solid mahogany top came factory equipped with Tusq nut and saddle. Looks good, sounds good. Sounds pretty decent plugged in too. I'll also second the Yamaha FGX800.

I would go to craigslist and buy a lightly used (import) Breedlove for around $250 myself

Yamaha and Alvarez are often great at this price point.
But I have been on a cheap Ibanez bender lately. I've really been wowed by every Ibanez acoustic under 3 bills I've played over the past few years.

I played a Guild 240 OM that was a gem. Had a pick up too for under $400. Sounded great acoustically too.

OP asked for acoustic/electric...
Since when did F series Yamahas come with on-board electronics? |

The non-x models have no electronics.
