Boucher - any difference between 2018 and 2024?
Curious about the evolution of Boucher guitars over the last few years.
Saw a couple comments about how the more recent guitars sounding better than slightly older ones. Appreciate your thoughts on this as I'm considering a used 2018. Is there a good reason to look at something more recent from them? thanks! |

Boucher guitars were revamped in 2014 so the 2018 is good.
Below is the link to a portion of an interview where Robin Boucher explains his journey to creating the new generation of his guitars. https://youtu.be/FIXqtw4RUTA?si=SqRu-fCDfmYiOTaJ Enjoy

I have a Boucher HG56 from 2018 and it's wonderful to play. I doubt you can go wrong if you have played the one you are looking at and it sounds good to you.
While I have not played a newer Boucher, why pay for new if you like this one? |

I would second this. And I have never read or heard of one negative review of any post 2018 or any other Boucher guitar but have repeatedly heard people talk about how consistently good every Boucher they play sounds to them.

From 2018 on there have not been that many changes, but in 2023 they did start using new bending and assembly molds. The improvements where straighter and more rigid sides for better resonates and sustain. Did you settle on a used Boucher?
I just completed a video on the Boucher lineup. |

Yes. Their prices have quadrupled since then. Steve

Yep, not to long ago there was nothing like it in the price range. Now for what they sell for one should consider the other options , and there are some great options.
I picked up a BG-52 in 2020 for almost half the price of what they are selling for now. Foolishly sold it to fund another guitar, which I eventually sold as well. Live and learn.

I do know that in late 2023 or so, they slightly changed the dimensions of their OM style. If I remember correctly, they made it a bit smaller.

I haven't noticed any differences in 2018 vs newer guitars. I bought my first Boucher new in 2018, an HG-56 from Soundpure in Durham. I hadn’t heard of Boucher, I was trying out Goodalls, Taylors, Collings, Pre-War, Preston Thompson, and Bourgeois OM’s. The Boucher HG 12-FTB was the most lively, dynamic and easiest playing guitar in the entire showroom. I bought it on the spot after about 5 minutes of playing, it had the biggest and most impressive sound of any guitar I’d ever played at the time. I bought two more Bouchers in 2023 from Brickhouse Guitars, a BG-151-M and a PS-SG-163. In a side-by-side comparison, the 2018 guitar is as good as the 2023 guitars. The 2023 Bouchers are more personalized to my playing preference, but every single Boucher I’ve played since 2018 (about 35 total) is spectacular in its own way, given the variation in woods and models. The build standards, guitar quality and the woods in Boucher guitars are world class, if anything has changed since 2018, it’s innovation with new tone woods, like as the Special Edition curly maple, but for me the passion and inspiration from these guitars is unmatched.

These new guitars are the best ones they have ever made, said the guy that just paid dearly for a new one. This 15 year old guitar I just bought is starting to sound old and wonderful, says the guy (me) who finally found one he could afford.
It is just what we do. Ever heard someone say, the guitar I bought is good, but that one I can't afford is so much better?

If you can get a 2018 for a good price, I wouldn’t hesitate.
Yes they have made some changes to their molds and such and continue to refine their builds… That being said, if the price is right it’ll be a stellar guitar.
