The last time I saw Chapin, she was sitting in with the Hansons(John Jennings/Rico P/Robbie Magruder/Mike Cotter at Durty Nelly's in Bethesda. They were still workin' on "State of the Heart".b They did a real nice version of Quittin' Time.

“On a tangentially flippant note, I see she is using a shubb capo. Given the slightly mad capo interest (and heated debate) in this forum, should we start a new thread on the lines of whether or not Mary Chapin Carpenter needs to change her capo to a yoke style capo?”

Another long-time MCC fan here, and I just saw her live again last week. And I’ll turn this capo idea around: since her notes all ring out so clear, true and in tune, all up & down the neck and in a variety of tunings, perhaps everyone here should be using a Shubb!

I love MCC’s music and am so happy that Shubb capos work for her but when it comes to my own playing, I’ll trust my own ears and hands. I imagine that’s what she does.
Best,
Jayne

Huge fan since 1990 here. What a talent she is. Her acoustic guitar skills are superb and love her songwriting.

My favorites

I’m not exactly sure what tuning that Sometimes Just the Sky is but two tunings that she uses a lot are: D A C# E A E and C G D G B C - also known as Admiral tuning. So, it just might be one of those.
Best,
Jayne

Pretty sure the tuning for this one is standard; capo @ 3rd or 5th.

You can’t always trust those websites to use the original altered tuning but, it sure is a possibility. Certainly, if one follows her movements on the video, it would clear it up.

Jayne

Yeah I think ultimate guitar is off on this one.

I'll have to ask my wife. She's learned how to play this song with the help of her guitar teacher who figured the tuning out.

In '88 - '89, I was living in Charlottesville, VA, and had to attend a weekly meeting in DC every Wednesday.....I'd drive to the Vienna Metro stop, take it in to the GW/Foggy Bottom stop, sit through a two hour meeting, then head back to Vienna. I'd usually be in my car headed home by 3:30 - 3:45.

There was a bluegrass/folk show out of a DC station that was on at that time, and they played MCC pretty regularly. She was gigging in Alexandria and DC at the time, and was pretty popular. I'd listen until I couldn't get the station anymore--somewhere around Culpepper, I think. Fell in love with her music then and have been a fan ever since.

She's gone through a few styles, kind of like Rodney Crowell, but I love the folk stuff the best. No one does the one person/one guitar thing better, IMO....
