Default NGD: Martin’s new slope dread (DSS-17) w/pics & sound clips

Arrived yesterday...in sub freezing temps. So finally got some time with it this morning. Tuned up both guitars thinking I’d test drive the new slope, then spend the rest of the time with the Big Dog (D-41). Didn’t happen. For the next hour I just couldn’t put it down.

First impressions: Feather light (well below four pounds), responsive, LOUD (probably thanks to the “oversized” lower bout that won’t fit in my D-41 case), sweet Martin tone...and fun to play. Like some of you have said about your J-45s...technically not your “best” guitar, but so much fun to play who cares, huh?

This certainly won’t replace my D-41. But it doesn’t look like Big Dog is going to turn this one into a case queen like it did previous partners - a J-45 after a year and a V-Class 714ce in two months. Those two found new homes...this sweet new slope might just have found a permanent abode.

So here are the specs, pics and some quick-and-dirty sound clips: Martin CS tells me the “mahogany” is either Honduran or Sipo, depending on what’s available on build dates. Mine looks like Sipo to me: https://www.martinguitar.com/guitars...hiskey-sunset/

Both guitars have fresh Martin Authentic Acoustic Treated PB 12s...

Congrats Roy! And it looks like you won the neck lottery too, as I don’t see any headstock wings on the back.

Play her in good health.

Love that first pic! The soft focus in the back makes them kind of look like mini figurines of guitars. In a good way!

Congrats on fine new instrument.

Nice! Visually and sonically, I think that’s a pair of guitars that are going to complement each other well. Enjoy

Looks and sounds great. You're going to have a blast with that DSS-17! Reminds me of my 000-15SM, not my finest yet I crave it.

Congrats on the new guitar. It's a beauty. Not that I'm in the market to buy a big guitar, cuz I'm not. But if I were...the DSS-17 is the one I would choose! If I were...but I'm not. Really I'm not... really...really...sigh.
