Swap HD-28V for D-28 Modern Deluxe?
Hi all,
I’m wondering if anyone has or planned on swapping an HD-28V for the new D-28 Modern Deluxe? I do very very much like my HD-28V but in a perfect world it would have the 1&3/4 neck. I think the VTS top is also a nice plus on the new MD’s. Also will the Modern Deluxe sell for 40% off like other standard models? If so I’m guessing the “upgrade” would cost me around $1,500. I’m not entirely sure it’s worth it but I do like the 1 &3/4 spacing more.

Early reports from people trying the new MD series suggests the new neck is VERY shallow...like shallower than the Performing Artist neck on the GPCPA4 and similar acoustic electric series.
Although your HD-28v has the 1 11/16 nut, that neck is deeper than the MLO/PA and what the new MD neck will be. When I heard this, I was very disappointed because I was hoping the new MD neck would be closer to the older and rounder C shaped necks that Martin used in the 1960s and 70s. Depends how you like your necks but no way I’m ordering one without trying it first.

I will be adding the 000-28MD to my HD28V if I like the neck. My HD28V is a Reno’s Music custom and Mark orders all his customs with 1.75 and MLO/PA. If I don’t like the MD neck, I’ve already picked out a 00-18 custom that will make a super noodling couch guitar and save me several hundred $$$.
By the way, Mark already has the D-28MD and OM-28MD in stock. Maybe he would make you a decent trade? I’ve played the D and I think it is sort of similar to the HDV sound-wise. The MDs are gorgeous guitars with that famous Martin Tone in spades. I’m sure you will love it but I’d keep the V if you can.

Thanks for the advice. I don’t think I could keep both. But I do think it’s a very possible trade.

Reading this thread, I have nothing to offer other than the selfish thought that “yay, some 1 11/16” guitars will finally hit the used market!”
Now, back to your regularly scheduled program...

Don’t ever give up a guitar you are happy with for the next big thing unless you’re 110% sure.

I was going to say the same thing. Just because something is new and has a ton of sexy modern features doesn't make your already "exceptional guitar" any lesser.

Kind of an old thread, but, as someone who currently has both a 2018 HD-28v and a D-28 Modern Deluxe... Keep the HD-28v if you're happy with it.
I'm most likely selling my HD-28v because of the pain the modified v neck gives my fretting hand (horrible cramp like pain the the fleshy part of my thumb in the palm). I picked up the Modern Deluxe to be it's replacement after demoing it along side a standard series HD-28. I need to put fresh strings on both, but in my initial comparison, they're both awesome, amazing guitars in their own ways. Sound wise, the HD-28v is more mellow and "rounded" while the Modern Deluxe is louder and brighter. I'll post my thoughts on them at a later date. |
