Recent Guitars
This first guitar was built in collaboration with my friend Dan Swanson and donated to the Mimbres Region Arts Council down here in SW NM to be raffled off in support of their activities. The drawing will be held in May at the Silver City Blues Festival - a big free party/music weekend headlined this year by Taj Mahal. Here is a link with some more info. :
http://mimbresarts.org/2015-scbbf-raffle/ Its an Advanced Jumbo shape with back and sides from "The Tree" and an Englemann Top. Here is a sunrise looking out over the town. : [IMG][/IMG] Here are a couple of shots of another Parlour soundbox going together.: [IMG][/IMG] [IMG][/IMG] Here is the second guitar out of the fancy Walnut.: [IMG][/IMG] One of the last Spruce logs I bought in Colorado had some bearclaw.: [IMG][/IMG] Finally - here is a Sunburst on a Brazilian Advanced Jumbo that went to Norman Harris.: [IMG][/IMG] Last edited by Don Musser; 04-22-2015 at 07:37 AM. |

Beautiful instruments as usual, Don (and Dan). I'm looking forward to seeing the raffle guitar at the festival next month.

Beautiful work - I especially love that walnut. Silver City is a great little town - I wish I had know about your shop when I was visiting a few years ago. Great little museum on the college campus, and the best birding in New Mexico.

Is that bearclaw "Colorado blue spruce?" Curious because my upcoming Baranik has this as a top wood.

Thanks Kevin - I thought I had that figured out before posting but it got by me.
Matthew - I bought and processed Colorado Spruces - Blue and Englemann - for about a decade. Both occasionally showed Bearclaw figure. The pictured Bearclaw top in this thread came from the very last Englemann log I purchased. It was big - 4 feet + in diameter at the base. Normally I would only buy the lower 16 foot section of a spruce log because size and limbs made it difficult to obtain good tops from the portions above 16 feet. I bought 48 feet of that last log - three 16 foot sections. Certain billets from one side of that tree showed an attractive Bearclaw figuring. |
