where were we....where were we.....
stripping down....the chicken and veggie soup thing...the memory game.... if you took one such musical move such as 0xx23x E7sus4 to x0x22x plain old A major... how many musical 'things' are contained within that move? how many musical concepts, ideas, facts, etc...(that you'd like to generalize to any key and have command of all over the fretboard) are contained in that move? remember...all we're trying to do here is put some theory into motion...... we need to play catch, daddy....

a short list (or maybe not so short) of stuff contained in that move....stuff that needs to be immediate in your head...and of course....how do you make it immediate, available, and useful without getting overwhelmed.....
and I'm going to purposely try to go 'overboard' here.. - E is the 5th of A - A is the 4th of E - G# is the major 3rd of E - a major triad is R 3 5 - a sus4 chord is R 4 5 - the minor 7th of E is D - a dominant 7th chord is R 3 5 b7 - flatted 7th, minor 7th, and lowered 7th are synonyms... con't...not close to done... again...trying to point something out....

again, going overboard..
- the major 3rd of A is C# - D and C# are a half-step apart - the 3rd fret on the 2nd string represents the note D (man overboard!....but there is a point here...a big point) - the 2nd fret on the 2nd string is C# - the 4th of A is D - the lowered 7th of the V chord likes to move a half-step to the major 3rd of the I chord.... not done....con't

ideas? ideas? ideas?
I mean, good golly, there are so many 'things' here to remember....how ya gonna do it....??? more 'stuff'...it's overwhelming if you let if overwhelm you of course.... the major 3rd of V7 chord likes to resolve up a half-step to the root of the I chord... the perfect 4th of the V chord is the root of the I chord... intervals of a third have a characteristic geometric shape intervals of a 4th have a characteristic shape, etc.... etc..etc...etc....overboard... essential tones....implied harmony... I can throw out roots...I can throw out 5ths... I can't throw out 3rds and 7ths....and then, well, actually, I can, through suspensions and extensions... playing catch playing catch....

Trees,
Just wanted to say how much I appreciate your posts. when I first started reading on this forum I thought to myself that I'd be lucky to find a guitar instructor who can spell things out like you do. Fortunately, I've been able to find one. Blessings! Allan |
