Default NGD: 2019 Gibson J-45 Cutaway !

NGD! 2019 Gibson J-45 Cutaway

What? Another NGD you ask? And a Gibson at that? I know right? ...I thought I was purely a "Martin guy too! I have fully embraced the value of a cutaway since adding the 2018 Martin DC-18e not long ago. (Cutaway D-18 Ambertone) It exceeded my expectations and that fed my desire to want a different acoustic cutaway to use an alternative option and/or back-up. I LOVE the Martin DC-18E. The value of a cutaway in a great classic sounding acoustic guitar has been cemented in place. Curiously, I do not hear anything missing sonically. There are those who say a Cutaway changes things and others say the area that is cutaway is the least consequential area in terms of sound. I simply judge a guitar based on its own merit. Does it inspire me? Does it sound good? Does it feel like 'home?'

How it happened?
The Santa Cruz strings I had on on my reasonably new DC-18E started to lost their luster. They were warming up in a very woody/organic earthy way and still very musical.. I normally change strings when the low E String loses its harmonic brilliance and 'zing'. That round detailed sound where you can hear the windings. But what happened was this; I started hearing a warmer, more fundamental J-45 kind of sound and that got my attention. There seemed to be more fundamental note with little less sparkle on the wound strings., It was delivering a more organic sort of roots/bluesy tone. I noticed I was inspired to play differently and it took me down a new road in terms of musical genre and playing style. Then it occurred and the muse whispered in my ear; "What about trying a Cutaway Gibson J-45 gary?!?" That's how all this started.

Gibson had just announced the 2019 models around this same few days and I noticed the 2019 models included the Cutaway J-45. I think they've been making this model the past couple years. I don't know if anything changed, but Other than the cutaway, this J-45 seems to be the same as the standard J-45.

The 2019 J-45 Cutaway arrived today, so this is a very initial report. In short, I LOVE it! Classic, Iconic sound and it looks incredible! I am being cautious to not compare to my Martin D-18 dreads since they are broken in, familiar and I already love them. Curiously, I did not like the Martin DC-18E nearly as much initially. It was proverbially "Tight and bright". But it has been warming up and opening up.

I am committed to judge the J-45 Cutaway on its own merits without A-B'ing right off the bat. (Props to my AGF friend Brent for that reminder) Video's will follow. Since it didn't happen unless I share pictures, here are some pics from todays fashion show. What a poser! :-)

That's pretty! Really graceful looking cutaway. Love the finish too. 2018 or 2019 model? Any difference?

Congratulations! It looks great...

As an owner of a few Martins, including a D18, I can vouch that a slope complements! They belong together. like Sammy and Frank.

Gorgeous, Gary! Can’t wait to hear you play it. A good J-45 is a special beast. Love mine.

Be interesting to see what strings you like on it. Santa Cruz Mids are a great match for mine. But I also liked Retros for a long time. To my ears Retros bring out the hog warmth; SC Mids bring out the punchy zing.

Beautiful!!! Welcome to the J45 family!!!

Also kudos to you for judging the J45 on its own merit!!! It's a unique, iconic guitar with its own unique tone, and different from your other iconic Martins.

Nice job Gary! Looks great. And nobody does a sunburst better than Gibson.

That is a beautiful instrument! I can only imagine it's tone.

You titled your thread as a 2019 J45 but then list 2018 in the body of your message. Can we assume that since it's still 2018, you are the proud owner of a beautiful 2018 J-45?

Best,
PJ
