The OP is a private seller asking question..
Curious why the thread all of a sudden is about retail shops ? 2 different things.. no? The answer was pretty much answered with the first reply. eBay and Reverb are they places to see "completed" sales. Also search Craigslist around the country... Easy to search for items and prices. In addition, check the Classified AGF and see what people are selling for... I find for the most part pretty good prices here. Lastly see what new one's are selling for *street price. This can help to price a used model - below new price depending on age and condition. |

Somebody else started it, it's not my fault.

But I don't think the inflated trade value thing is always about flipping. Rather, it has become a convention here (and probably other forums). I've done it myself just because I thought that's what people did. |

A couple of shops in my 'hood simply go to Reverb when determining what they'll give on a trade. It's a good starting point and they'll wheel and deal based on that average number.

I would think sale value would always be higher than trade value. You know the old adage, you can never go up in price, but you can always go down,

buying used I usually try to go with 30% less than new if its recent and good, when I sell i try to break even on used- 30% off what i paid new, if Ive had it a while, i really dont try to make a profit

I just google the model of guitar and put For Sale after it , that seems to pop up ebay/Reverb/craiglist/AGF..etc listings old and new......and gives me an idea for a start .

Mea culpa!!!
I was only speaking in context of a store trade. My bad... Although, to be honest, in my experience trading is about 99.99% of the time done in a store context as opposed to individuals trading guitars... But you are correct. I overlooked the individual to individual context with my snarky reply. Je m'excuse... |

Dave, thanks for the clarification. You're a trusted information source and I just wanted to be sure I wasn't completely missing something. I do understand the difference where dealers are concerned.

Sooooooo... was David E's question ever explained? Why would private sellers inflate trade value here (and yes, I've seen it and wondered much the same as him)?

Everybody here is so serious. I was going to say there are two prices I consider: what I will pay for one, and what I will ask for one that I am selling.

Explained? The answer is yes. Besides the obvious answer and it's derivatives, there are a lot of other different opinions posted which proves that the reason is perceived differently by everybody.

Many times, I would ask for a higher value for a trade because I would probably prefer an outright sale for cash. I might not get the trade value I initially request...we all know how negotiations involve back and forth, give and take. But it is a starting point. I wouldn't consider it "inflation" of value, any more than I would consider taking a lower price from someone local to be an act of devaluing: not having to take time to pack up a guitar and take it someplace to be shipped is worth something to me. |
