Favorite Crossover?
What's a really nice ($2K) crossover nylon string? Cordoba, Furch, Yamaha?

I recently purchased a new Martin 000C12-16E for right around the $2k mark. I am very pleased with it. The fit and finish is perfect and it has that Martin quality of construction we know and respect. The action is right where I like it and it sounds very pleasing to the ears. Full disclosure though... I didn't immediately bond with it right out of the box. It took a day or two. The tone leaned more towards steel string than nylon string and I want to lean more nylon with it. I swapped out the Martin strings that came on it and now it's more of the tone I'm desiring to hear. The guitar responds well to both fingerstyle or using a pick. All in all its an excellent option. I am not crazy about the padded gig bag though. I don't mind padded gig bags, but this one is lacking storage that would be useful.

For me it’s the furch, I actually sold my much more expensive lowden because I loved the furch so much

Carvin (now Kiesel) CL450 with spruce or cedar top.
If you're playing it predominately electric, I suppose one of the fancy tonewood tops would do. |

A discerning friend of mine, after much deliberation, has just purchased a Taylor 412CE-N. It looks like a lovely instrument from the pictures he’s sent me, and I trust his judgement - and also understand his reluctance to part with money until he’s absolutely sure he’s found ‘the one’.
This, coupled with my personal experience with another friend’s 241CE-N, which I found most impressive, leads me to suggest that you might want to check out Taylor’s nylon string options.

Cervantes crossover… It’s very nicely built and has great tone and sensitivity and is quite loud and punchy when you dig in…

I have one of these as well and agree it’s a great build and nice ones. Mine is cedar/EIR. I was surprised by how loud it can be. I forget which strings are currently on it - probably D’Addario. (Forgot to write it down).

I currently have the Kremona Verea, and it's getting a lot of playing time right now.
For crossovers, I much prefer 12, rather than 14, frets to the neck and with a cutaway. The tricky thing I've found is that unless the neck is uncomfortably long (like the Martin, which I had to send back) they require very hard tension strings to avoid fret buzz and weak sound. I found this to be the case with the Taylor '12s. This Kremona is living well with La Bella 2001 Medium Hard strings right now and has a rich, pleasing tone, particularly on the basses. |
