Short answer: MARKETING AND EASY LABELING

Longer answer: for once, instrumentation, lyrics, song structure, arrangements and the like are variants of more established and already labeled music styles.

Well, sure, can you speak a little more specifically about these elements - where we see them differ for these artists?

As an officially old fart about to turn 69 years old, I'm familiar with each of those artists, enjoy them all and have never given a thought to what genre someone else's opinion might label them..

That's really all a "genre" is... someone's personal opinion of a piece of music..

My tastes have always been pretty eclectic, so I've never taken any time or effort to dissect or analyze it for myself or others...

Over on the flute/whistle board at forums.chiffandfipple.com , we have a forum devoted to Musical Genre Hybridization

Formerly North-Indian Global-Zombie-Trance Jazz, Barbershop-Darbhanga Fusion, Rai-Ska Outlaw Country Operetta , Neurofunk Madrigal Throat Singing, Freestyle Acid House Flamenco, Twelve Tone Boy Groups, Dark Ambient Ragtime Fusion, Klezmer Surf Trance; Gregorian Chant/Bluegrass; Andean-Reggae Black Metal for Lapsed Lutherans; Chinese Opera-Mississippi Delta Blues; Alpine Yodeling-Samba Fusion; and Mariachi-Polka Waltz-Punk Forum

All in fun, but some of the above may actually be descriptive of real influences.

I enjoyed the videos. Hmmm, what would Billy Joel say?
