Default Mic comparison opinions . . .

Straightforward subjective question . . .
Which of these three (x2) for single acoustic guitar home recordings? 1 large, 1 medium, 1 small diaphragm -

Thanks.
Is there a differentiating spec/feature or just the overall performance . . .?

Well, I guess it was a moot question -
No one (Sweetwater, Guitar center, even Audio Technica) show any in stock and the earliest estimate I saw was February - and, not sure that meant 2020 or 2021.

There are a few out there at $250, but the Audio Technica price is $149.00 along with Sweetwater and GC.

Wow. Makes me wonder if it is out of production or just Chinese Corona supply chain backlog. (I am just guessing made in China.)

Yeah, they've been sold out for a while - since the spring at least. I went for a Warm WA47Jr that was a MF or GC deal a few months back.

Wrighty gets really good results with his AT2020 mics. His recordings sound better than mine and I have AT2035 mics. Where you record (room treatment) is very important and Wrighty also knows a bit about eq'ing audio as well.

Thanks for the kind words Barry ;-)

AT2020’s are pretty solid, but I can’t compare them to the others I am afraid - they may well be better but you can certainly get decent results with the 2020’s (Just see Doug Youngs various recordings with them)

Spend 10 minutes on this link and apply what you learn to help determine what mic is best for you.

Someone has maybe said this already but it's good to have 2 mics to enable you to record in stereo.

Man, I love this forum . . .
Current path is 2 X AT2020's with a 2i2 Gen 3.
I can't recall if the recommendation was to record a single acoustic with 2 mics in stereo setting on 2i2, or mono - 1 track per mic. Then mix.

That will really depend on the DAW software... you have two mics and two inputs. They can either route them to separate tracks, or to a single stereo track, on the computer. The interface itself doesn't have any settings for stereo or mono, just two individual channels, one for each mic.

Advantages of a single stereo track: you only have to apply common effects like EQ or reverb to one track. Advantages of two separate tracks: you can pan them as you like to vary the stereo image a bit, and (mostly applicable to recording a spaced pair of two different types of mics) have different EQ/effects if you want for each mic.

Another way to do things is to have separate tracks for the two mics, and don't apply affects to the individual tracks, but to a "master" track (also called a bus) that already combines both tracks. That has the advantages of both approaches, but takes a bit more knowledge of the DAW to set up.

You might start with just a single stereo track, but learning to record separate tracks to a bus would be a big benefit eventually.

In general, with AT mics, as you go up the numbers, the mics get better. I think the 2035 is supposed to have slightly less self-noise than the 2020. But really, the difference between a $100 mic and a $150 mic is going to be mostly unnoticeable. Room acoustics, mic placement, your guitar, and other factors will matter orders of magnitude more.
