Default DADGAD Blues "A Minor Groove"

I've been slowly going through Rob MacKillop’s book DADGAD BLUES: Easy to Intermediate. He’s such a down to earth teacher and the book is so accessible. This one is called “A Minor Groove" and is a lot of fun to play. It's been helpful to bounce back and forth between the Blues and Celtic fingerstyle.

Played on McIlroy AP25
Recorded with Shure MV88

I think you’d like some of the tunes. The book is a mixture of tunes, riffs and grooves. Since I’m just delving into DADGAD it’s really helpful to have easier pieces like this one to start with and others that will take much more practice.

Oh yes!! I can’t play much yet but there’s so much to love about DADGAD and the blues. Al Petteway has done a bunch of DADGAD blues as well as Appalachian folk which ranges from blues to Celtic.

I think you should learn “Wayfaring Stranger.” I bet you’d love it!

Nice job E!

There's more than Celtic to be done in DADGAD. Doug Young has a Christmas tune book in DADGAD too.

I'm learning one of Al Petteway's blues in DADGAD now - Walkin' Stick. Slow going (literally - 50% play along speed),
I got his instant dvd thing from Homespun. He does a few tunes on that lesson dvd, its good (and challenging for my older fingers).

I agree, its better to switch out and play different types of music now and then.

Good recommendations there! I’ve been thinking of picking up Doug Young’s book. Thanks for sharing

Hi Eucatastrophe, I'm also a big fan of using DADGAD for bluesy playing. Makes for a cool sound, doesn't it? It adds an edge to blues that really appeals to me. Nice playing!

You’re too kind! Thanks!

I’m really looking forward to learning DADGAD and especially for blues too. It seems just right for it

The songs I started with in DADGAD were from Jim Tozier's book "Celtic Guitar Solos". There are some tricky ones in there but two of my favorite "easy" arrangements from it are The Flower of Magherally and Star of the County Down. Check them out if you're inclined!

I second this. Al Petteway has a Homspun lesson "Blues Guitar Arrangements in DADGAD" that is good.

Thanks for the encouragement and good words!

Thanks for the recommendation...The Flower of Magherally” was one of the first songs I learned from Tozier’s book! I posted my try at it in the Show and Tell a few weeks ago. Such a beautiful song.

Still learning “Star of the County Down”
