Thanks Alan, what you mentioned makes a lot of sense.

I'll be trying out the water spritz test on my next glue up.

I know I ask many questions (perhaps too many), but this forum has been so accommodating, and you never seem to hesitate to post well thought out and helpful responses to queries. You're unique insight and willingness to share is admirable.

It depends on the glue. Aliphatic resin requires close wood to wood contact and if the joint is sanded then fine is better than course. But the best joint is planed, not sanded.

Epoxies and some other adhesives are different and stick via a mechanical bond, performing better when the surfaces provide something to grip onto.
