Compression can be tricky and it's easy to mess up the sound.

Thanks Doug - would that be the threshold setting at just under 1db?

Would you leave ratio / attack / release on default for starters?

I'd suggest just skipping it to start with. The compressor I use doesn't provide the standard compressor settings, but I'd go for a low ratio, say 1.1, a fairly short attack, and fast release, but you can experiment with those. At least the way I use it, I can barely hear any difference when it's switched on - if you do it's too much. Sometimes I think I only imagine I even hear any difference.. Basically, if I can hear it, it's probably too much. Compression is useful on drums, vocals, maybe even hard rhythm guitar. Quiet fingerstyle like this, not so much.

Never personally use compression on solo acoustic guitar. Bringing up the volume of the quiet parts at the cost of dynamic range and vitality is not worth it.
A couple of times in recordings with overs I have used a compressor in the role of a limiter - e.g. -1 db at say 10 X compression ratio.
