Update by OP: I tried a 2 day hike with my Blackbird Lucky 13... fail... too clunky to manage on the trail, too easy to bash it strapped to the back of a day pack.

Enter the KLOS CF-body & wood-neck. I watched these in development thru Kickstarter. They pulled it off and the business appears to be thriving. The KLOS is small enough that with the neck removed, I could fit it into a 55L backpack and still have room for all my other gear. It weighs only 2.5# total. Cost is only $600.

I've decided to sell my Lucky 13 and spring for a KLOS, looks like it may actually work for backpacking and kayaking. Wish me luck... does anyone here want my Lucky 13?

When they say Rider for ease they’re talking about the steel string. I had a nylon string that I sold. It sounded great but wasn’t that small to tote around camping or such. The steel Rider was much easier. Because of cost I bought a mini guitar by Islander (Kanile’a) and also tote around my Blackbird tenor uke which is indestructible and sounds great - - big sound.

The best, really portable guitar is the suitcase guitar designed to fit in a suitcase; 24" long, 19" scale, 2"body. Alas, no one makes one.
