Will removing my resonator's screens make it sound --
Less like a banjo and more like an ordinary acoustic guitar?

No.
It sounds like a banjo? How does that happen? |

The tone of a resonator is 99% about the cone and how well it is fitted and tensioned.
Many Dobro players have the standard cone of (for instance Gibson assembled dobros) replaced - such as Quarterman - I had a Beard cone fitted. National cones can't be beat for biscuit style. however, they must be seated properly and tensioned correctly.

You don't say what kind of resonator you have. I don't know what a screen is, and I don't know anything about spider bridge instruments, so maybe that's it. If so, may as well stop reading my babble now.
I did have a circa 1985 single cone, round neck OMI resonator once. And it did sound like a banjo. I eventually decided to replace the cone with one from National Resophonic. That was nice because it lead to several phone calls from Mr Don Young himself. He thought he might've built the very instrument we were talking about. In any case, the new cone improved the sound, but it was still very banjo like. I don't think there's anyway around that with a single cone instrument. I sold that instrument and now have a National Tricone. Which I never seem to play, but it does have a completely different tone and way more sustain than a single cone. Banjo is not the instrument that comes to mind with this one. |

Tune it to an open tuning and play it with a slide, banjo sound will disappear.

Screens visible here: https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikiped...1/16/Dobro.jpg They eliminate the buzzing sound caused by flies buzzing around inside your dobro. |
