I always understood their to be "build luthiers" and "repair luthiers". I assume most skilled repair staff at a shop is a repair luthiers.

I believe some (many?) small shop "build luthiers" work as "repair luthiers" to earn some of their income. e.g. Mr. Matsuda at Gryphon.

My dad's a luthier, so once in a while I tell my friends, "I would have love to have watched 'Dune' this weekend, but I had to help my luthier replace the P-trap under his kitchen sink."

Can you both fit under the sink?

I’ll confess right up front that I haven’t read all the pages of this thread. So if someone has already made the exact same point that I’m about to make, my apologies.

Here it is: language moves on. “Luthier” is now a common term for “music store guitar technician” because it’s come to mean that. It doesn’t matter that back in the 1970’s it didn’t mean that, because now it does, and these days that’s one of the meanings of the word.

Hope that makes sense.

Bravo!
Well Said Wade.
Their are many guitar Teck's, who occasionally build a guitar.
From a kit or from scratch, all you have to do is build one guitar to become a luthier.

Not so strange. Back in my auto repair days (1970s) we often did repairs that improved on what the car manufacturer did originally.
