Default Why do I want a Martin D-28 if I don't like the looks and sound?

Have any of you been in this position? I really want to buy a Martin D-28. I know the current reimagined D-28 is not the same guitar McCartney and Lennon used, but it's just such a famous model and I really want to own one.

Here's the weird thing... I've played a couple reimagined D-28s, and I wasn't impressed with the tone / sound. Also, my $100 Mitchell looks nicer than the D-28 (to me). Pics of the Mitchell are below...

For some reason even though I'm not impressed with the tone of the D28 and the looks are boring (compared to other brands at $3000) I still want the D-28!

What's going on!?

What’s going on? I have no idea, my friend. If I don’t like the tone of a guitar it goes back on the rack. Pronto. Period. No over thinking allowed…

The D28 is certainly an iconic guitar. Wanting to own for its own sake makes sense in a way. Is it the Reimagined in particular that you find yourself drawn to?

dunno, i defintely would not want a guitar if i didn't like the sound or it ..or the looks? would be a lot easier to simply get gassed about something that you like imo.

I actually prefer the looks of the pre reimagined version.. I don't like the aging toner on the newer ones, and I don't like the open back tuners. I also prefer a black pickguard..... I've never played an older D28... Maybe I would like it... I'm not buying one without trying it first lol

Here's my $120 Mitchell D-120, with all the features I would want on a D-28... Abalone Rosette, Black pickguard...

Then perhaps you should look for an old D-28, before they were "reimagined," and might be more similar to what Lennon and McCartney actually played with the Beagles.

Buy the D-28, hang it on the wall to look at, play your Mitchell.

Or save a bunch of money and put up a D-28 poster.

Third option... get one of those fake Martin decals off flea bay and slap it on your Mitchell head stock.

Sounds like you have been drinking too much kool-aide. A D-28 is an awesome guitar but I have no desire to buy one personally. They don’t fit my playing style and I prefer mahogany guitars. I’m also more of a Gibson guy. So maybe you don’t need to buy one.

Are you sure youre being totally honest with yourself, or creating reasons to resist the GAS urge? I mean, I realize the D-28 is not everyone’s favorite model, but most would say it has a pretty darn good tone. (Barring lemons, poor set up, etc). If you REALLY werent impressed with tone/looks, then walk away. Or at least buy used so you can reasonably get out of it when the honeymoon is over.

I am glad you like your $100 Mitchell but I highly doubt it can compare to a good example of a D-28.

The D-28 doesn't have an abalone rosette.
