Frank -- thanks for your post.

I guess enough time has passed to help me be reflective and grateful. I was able to be on the earth when a man named John Prine walked the earth. I was able to see him multiple times in concert, including twice with Steve Goodman.

So I come away more than anything being grateful for John and his music.

Johnny, rest in peace, and we'll see you on the other side.

Scott Memmer

ALBD:

Perfect. Just perfect.

I took the liberty of converting the vid to a screen capture, which attracts a lot more viewers. It took me a long time figuring out how to do that. If interested, let me know and I'll PM you the format. Thanks again.

To generate the YouTube preview with the embedded link, just put the "code" part ("skRTunvxf2E") inside the YOUTUBE bbcode that is generated by the little chevron icon (go Advanced).

Default John Prine Tribute & Celebration on YouTube

Sorry if this had been posted, but I didn't see it so here it is.

Wonderful tributes and performances from the Prine family, Jason Isbell & Amanda Shires, Sturgill Simpson, Brandi Carlile, Margo Price, Bonnie Raitt, and more.

Be safe and let's follow John's lead in music, life, and love.

Picture Show: A Tribute Celebrating John Prine

Here’s a song I wrote to celebrate John Prine after I heard about his death last spring. I think he would have appreciated it. It’s called “John Prine Moves to the Great Southwest For Reasons Related to His Health.”

Elninobaby, as the OP of this thread that has been run well-night three years now, long before John's passing, and on behalf of the all this thread's participants, thanks for that witty and heartfelt song. Hey, Peeps, you should listen to this.

In the time since JP passed in April 2020, YT has exploded with tons of unseen videos of him performing. For those of a more literary bent, a number of years ago Ted Kooser, who at the time was the Poet Laureate of the United States -- and who was and is a devoted Prine fanatic -- invited John for a sit-down discussion (interspersed with a few song performances) to talk about his life, his songwriting process, and his career. Pretty high-falutin' stuff for a mailman from Maywood, Illionois. Enjoy!

And thanks again, Elninobaby, for your terrific song and performance.

Hi Charmed Life! Thank you SO much for that! It means a lot, coming from someone who started this thread. I write songs for all kinds of reasons, and connecting like this with someone who recognizes what I was trying for really touches me. Thank you!

Now that my daughter has grown up and is on her own, it has been especially nice to see that her affinity for John Prine is alive and well. I pre-ordered tickets for her a couple of years ago so she could see him at the National Theater in DC where she works. She loved it. She especially liked his commentary. After someone in the audience shouted out a song request, John said, "We play all our songs in alphabetical order...but I'm not sayin' which alphabet."
Last fall I managed to pre-order tickets for his show at the Birchmere, one of my favorite haunts when I lived in DC many years ago (my daughter was born there -- DC, that is, not the Birchmere). I flew up and we went to the show together. John Prine at the Birchmere -- life doesn't get that much better, but it was sweeter to share it with my daughter.
I am fortunate to own a 1966 Gibson J200 that John traded into Gruhn's several years ago. I have a handwritten note recalling the songs he used the guitar for on "The Missing Years." That guitar has all the bad construction attributes Gibson was doing in 1966, and it still sounds killer. Mojo.
I don't know if John Prine changed my life, but his songs and his humor and his truths sure changed my attitude about life.
Exactly odo, Quasimodo!
Long live JP!
Billy, thank you SO MUCH for that story. Yes, John has been the glue in our family for more than a generation now as well.

Our oldest daughter got married two years ago, and unbeknownst to me she had set up a play list for the reception dancing with a couple Prine songs added in. She planned ahead by choosing the song for my first dance with her as, "Daddy's Little Pumpkin." So much fun.

My daughter also gave me one of the greatest gifts of my life the day before. My wife helped me pick out a brand-new suit months before the wedding, including a dress shirt with French cuffs (meaning it needed cuff links). The day before the wedding my daughter gave me a pair of cuff links. On one was a picture of the two of us with her as an toddler. One the other was the inscription, "I loved you first."

Just wow. I was destroyed.

Thank God for John Prine and all the good he's brought into my life.

Appreciate It, Billy,
Scott Memmer

Ive been to lots of live shows, big, little, unknowns, famous, coffee houses, even pierogie bars with a stage....but Ive never seen a more intimate interaction between a performer and crowd as JP. At 52 I was a little late joining the fan family, but SOOOO glad for the times I got to see him!
