Default Recording Fingerstyle Guitar, Mono or Stereo?

IF you where to record solo fingerstyle guitar, would you go with mono or stereo? AB or XY?

I record solo fingerstyle stuff for my family and friends. Place a LDC down by the bridge and a SDC around the neck joint both mics between 6" - 12" from the guitar.

The mic signals go into my Apogee Duet and out to my MacBook Pro running Logic. Each mic is recorded as a mono track which are then panned right and left.

Is fun!

I take a somewhat simpler approach. I record fingerstyle guitar in stereo using a single stereo mic (Rode NT4) positioned 6"- 8" in front of the 13th fret, into an Apogee Duet into GarageBand on my iMAC.

Tailingloop:

I just record covers with no intention of making money on them. My stuff goes to family and friends for either their amusement or dismay. LOL!

Went up to Soundclick and it's a twisty process to legally post covers so I passed.

Just sent you a private message.

this is my technique as well, except i place the mics about 18" from the guitar.

experiment with placement and distance.

I always use stereo. Specifically a spaced pair around 8-12 inches away:

If your present situation makes mono recording more practical, check out this previous thread about how to make a mono recording sound stereo -- lots of good advice . . .
