Default This is one great DVD by Pete Hutlinger

I've taught with Pete at Jorma's Fur Peace Ranch and not only is he an outstanding player but his teaching style is second to no-one.

Peter Huttlinger provides you with the advice, practice routines and exercises that will enable you to play with good tone, strict timing and confidence.

Essential Exercises For Fingerstyle Guitar is one great DVD. I own it, reviewed and learned some interesting things from it.

Check it out here.

Hi Toby...

As a fingerstyle teacher, I agree. This is a DVD I often suggest to students to recommend when parents/spouses ask "What do you want for Christmas/your birthday?"

And I give them a heads up that it means more 'work' than play.

Larry's songs...

…Just because you've argued someone into silence doesn't mean you have convinced them…

Great idea Larry! I agree about the more work than play ethic. Sometimes we have to break it to them... gently.

I own this and like it a lot. I really do need to go back and learn that Romanza--very pretty, not too difficult, and yet I've never bothered to memorize it!

Also, Pete playing "Superstition" is one of the best things I've ever seen on guitar on youtube--love his arrangement, love the energy, love the solid groove, love that he can smile and joke through what still looks to me to be a very difficult song.

I'm hoping to start fingerstyle... both as accompanyment and solo, is this suitable for beginners? I basically just stum chords and sing currently.

(I try to flatpick sometimes, but it would be better if I didn't )

Hi Paulee...

No, this is definitely an intermediate level DVD.

I have this DVD and am obviously not up to this level as of yet. Can you or Toby advise what would be a good DVD leading up to this level? Thanks!

Hi Frasier. Perhaps I can better answer your question if I knew what your present skills are and what are your goals.

Hi Toby, thank you for responding.

I am a beginner (at best - lol) and would just like to know my way around the fretboard and be able to improvise wherever my thoughts/feelings take me. I do have Mark Hanson's 'Fingerstyle Guitar' and have learned "Canyon Canon" with some proficiency. (ex. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0cMBbSK7dXM)

I think after I get the basics down I could be more specific what direction I would like to go?!

Hope that helps?!!! And thank you for your time!
