New Set Up on My Shorty
John Cotter has set up both of my Phoenix guitars. I was not sure what to expect with carbon fiber. He did a set up with the height at the 12th fret at 2/32nds. He put Elixir nano lights on her.
Once again, as I had experienced with my wood guitars, a dramatic improvement in sound and playability. There is no question that Rainsong sets their guitars very high at the factory. My Shorty plays like butter now. The Shorty was also very bright before the set up. I played for over an hour last night and just cannot get over how sweet and mellow the sound is now. Yes, to my ears, VERY wood like. I am blessed to have found a great tech for my guitars (unlike my ability to find a decent bike mechanic here in Phoenix!). I think those of you that have never had a set up will be blown away when you have it done properly. By the way, MacNichols will do a set up included in the price of your guitar. They have an in depth questionnaire, and I have heard they do fantastic set ups.

It's awesome that you have a good luthier close to you Lisa, nothing beats a setup done by a qualified luthier that had a chance to talk to you in person. Let me ask, was your setup perfect the first time or did the luthier make additional tweaks? I ask because it seems ever setup I have ever had done required a little extra tweaking.
Wow, 4/64th is extremely low. Is that at the low or high E? BTW, you do know your guitar came with Elixir Nano Lights from Rainsong already? |

Yes Ted, he went with the Elixir lights and I knew this what they came with. This was a first time set up, and to clarify, he is a guitar tech specialist, not a luthier. John Cotter gets it right the first time. He watches you play so he can access your touch on the strings. John is a natural, and extremely good at what he does.
I wanted heavier strings as I play one full step down. He found after he did the set up, that it played great with the lighter strings. Ted, the difference is far beyond what I expected. Honestly, I was not sure with carbon fiber that I would hear a change. It is dramatic. I will get more info on the height.

4/64 is a tribute to the guitar maker not every guitar can get there! That's about a perfect neck. Congrats

This is a great point. I just took my classical guitar back in and he is doing another adjustment. Clearly, no tech can get it perfect the first time. I like to play them as much as I can so I can take them back quickly to get them adjusted again without having to pay the full price.

Kramster played my Shorty last night and immediately noticed the great action and set up. He even thought it sounded better. Set up is so key for playability and sound!

Do you know how much relief there is in the neck? I would think at 4/64 you got to be close to flat?

Lisa, So you have Elixir nano lites on it now? I'll bet it plays really easy!
Are these strings the ones you like best ? |
