Default Goodall Guitars - Do they belong in General Discussion or Custom Shop?

Just curious what the pulse is here. Goodalls were built in Hawaii until 2009. I think they were building about 400 per year which I would describe as a small production shop (similar to Collings?). Now they are a 3 person shop in Fort Bragg, CA building about 40 per year.

I believe that they are firmly committed to building the finest guitars they can.

So do they belong in General?

In Custom?

Or should there be a distinction between them with Hawaii in General and recent CA in Custom?

I am also going to post this in Custom Shop because I'm curious if there is a difference in perception. Please only vote in this first place you see the poll.

I own Goodall guitars from Hawaii and California and i still vote for general. I think custom shop should be for specific build threads on custom guitars so if your Goodall fits put it there also. I usually stay in the general forum because outside of it you see very little action so it stagnates a bit.

I would tend to put then in General but I think the mods are fine with those threads in either location. You will typically see more traffic in the General section anyway.

I must agree. They are building most on spec, which is fine. A friend has a koa backed dread that is among the most memorable guitars I have played. They are pretty great.

They belong ANYWHERE AND EVERYWHERE!!!

For clarification, it's a two-man shop (James and Luke) building the guitars, with Jean Goodall managing the biz end of things... and their target for production is 8 guitars per month, or at least it was when I moved from Fort Bragg in 2012...

Default Custom?

They're definitely a small volume shop, but they still build a lot on spec that winds up in shops as new. To meet the "Custom" designation I would think most or all of their production would be BTO, Yes?

Not sure where current Goodals belong but perhaps we need a new sub forum for polls.

Custom Shop = Hand built and unique custom guitars from professional luthiers, small builders, and individuals.

Goodall's are:
  • hand built (yes)
  • unique (some, not all)
  • professional luthiers (yes)
  • small builders (yes)
  • Individuals (no)
So, if someone ordered a custom Goodall (or for that matter a Bourgeois, Collings, Huss & Dalton or Santa Cruz) with custom options, I think it would be appropriate to post it in the Custom Shop.

If however you purchased a stock Goodall from one of the 26 dealers that carry them, I would say no, post in the General Forum.

If indeed their output is 40-instruments a year, with 26 dealers, "Custom Shop" Goodall's are few and far between.

My $.02

There are enough of them floating around from all their years of production to qualify in the "general" category. Or so I think.

General, I purchased mine from a retail music store, no special order but so glad I made the two hour drive and the purchase. What an outstanding instrument

I have a 2003 Goodall Dread with Adirondack Spruce Top and Brazilian Rosewood back and sides. It is certainly an extremely nice instrument, but I don't consider it "custom." It is more like "upgraded." The quality probably exceeds that of some custom builders and individual luthiers, but to me, the custom forum is for guitars where there has been extensive communication and perhaps even collaboration between builder and customer, not "just" a guitar built with special, predetermined boxes checked.
