Smile Lovely rosette!

I REALLY like the Koa Rosette. For some reason I am much more attracted to wood rosettes with the grain intact and parallel with the top grain. Just me, but I have found I am not fond of the radial look for rosettes or bindings...

Glad you are enjoying the router.

Carry on gentlemen... and have fun

Hey, good luck up in the Northwest. I hope you come home empty handed in terms of guitars that is! Have a wonderful show.

Thanks guys, glad you checked in.
Now back to work for me... The brace openings have been cut, braces are ready to go, and we're off:

IMG_2001.jpg

After these had been clamped about 3 hours, Steve's braced back came out of the go bar deck, and brace carving commenced.
Here we have an assortment of brace-carving tools that all have their function. These are enjoyable things, they feel right in your hand, and pulling them out is like visiting with old friends:

IMG_1995.jpg

More work, while the reinforcement strip is protected:

IMG_1997.jpg

And a view of the mostly-finished carving job. A bit of refinement remains, as well as some clean up, but the bulk is done. At last, this handsome piece of wood is looking somewhat like a guitar back:

Thanks,

Steve

Looking great Steve!
You say that these are almost completed, does that mean it has been voiced yet? What is the process for checking this?
I've read in some cases that voicing is done after the box is closed, but I would imagine this is quite tricky in the enclosed space of the box?
Any explanation would be appreciated.

Hi Zandit, thanks for the kind word. We don't voice the back, per se, so I'm not referring to further voicing. Rather I have more work to do on the ends of those braces. Some might think of this as a voicing process, but I have no target note in mind. Rather my goal is to remove needless weight, by reducing mass where the sides are already contributing stiffness. As for voicing a flat top box after it is closed, that is indeed tricky. I hope this helps a bit,

Steve

Thanks for that Steve, most insightful.
Thanks for taking the time to address the weirder questions we ask!

Yes, these guitar shows can take it out of you. We got home around 11:30 pm on Monday. Tuesday was unpacking/regrouping. Wednesday we gave it a brave effort, sorta. But today it seems like we got some traction again. Here I am routing brace pockets into the linings to receive the back:

IMG_2053.jpg

Those are supposed to be my hands, but the camera not only adds 5 pounds but age spots. We'd better hurry up with this build...
That allowed a test fit of the back:

IMG_2054.jpg

And then with back braces located, we have our positions for side braces. The one difference is locating/preparing for a sound port:

Thanks for watching,

Steve

Really starting to take shape! Are the linings cedar?

No...they look like cedar, but they are lightweight mahogany.
We'll throw some cedar shavings into the guitar for some added fragrance.
I realize we are a bit out of sequence on our photos. Eg, fitting the back on completed rims. When did that step (rims) get done???
Unfortunately, we didn't get pics of bending, or gluing in head and tail blocks, but we do have this:

IMG_1935.jpg

There you see Ryan gluing on linings to sides that are bent.
And here is the block for Steve's arm bevel:

IMG_1949.jpg

That ^ is a laminated construction. And in this case it's redwood (of course). This yields an exact fit, a super-strong construction, one with no cross grain weaknesses. It's somewhat like a boomerang, and we believe that what goes around comes around.
Isn't that important in a bevel?

A picture showing our new approach for side braces. We're now attaching them to the outside of the rims!

IMG_2060.jpg

Alright, not really. On the outside of the rims we're simply using some clamping cauls to prevent marring the sides.
Soon we will be gluing on the back.
Stay tuned,

Steve

A bit more rim work, showing Ryan dressing the side braces:

IMG_2072.jpg

Then cutting the sound port:

IMG_2073.jpg

And finally gluing on the back:

A good afternoon!
