two trains running John Hammond
I really love John Hammond's version of this song (two trains running) from his first album on the Vanguard label. I can't figure out how he is strumming/plucking the strings. Not the individual notes but the basic riff. I have heard and seen numerous other players do this song but would love to know how to do it his way. If anyone cares to take a crack at it would be much appreciated. Thank you, phxguy
P.S. I would put up a link but apparently you have to go to youtube for it. I saved it to my favorites but now it says the video is unavailable although I can still hear it by going directly to youtube. |

Thanks rick-slo. I can listen to it but I can't figure out how he is playing that riff. It doesn't sound like a simple strumming motion.

Its not surprising at least to me that you can't get it just from the audio - IMHO unless you've studied that kind of music and looked at some of his videos. Homespun has a lesson with him. His technique is both complex and percussive, with an extensive vocabulary of technique and rhythm - brushes, hitting the guitar, playing notes, snapping strings etc - I read awhile back that he'd gone through 7 cones on his resonator. Here's a small demo of the lesson below, hope that helps:

Cant really help with notating the song but as an anecdote I was a bit of a John Hammond Fan back in the 70s , and did have his "I'm Statisfied" album .
The history of that song is kind of interesting also . It's origins are probably a combination of one or more old Delta Blues songs. Muddy Wateres released a version called "Still a Fool" in 1951 BUT My favorite version, combining lyrics from two Muddy Waters songs "Rolling Stone" 1950 ( rumored to be where the name of group came from) and "Still a Fool" 1951......Is this version by The Blues Project.
