I always start with scales and troublesome riffs and fingering practice. I am careful to maintain good form, timing, intonation, etc. mostly because it's the only time that this happens. It seems to me to be superior to stumbling over something that I want to do in a song for six months, or worse, changing it cuz "I can't do it". If I practice it, eventually- I can do it. This warmup only takes ten minutes or so. And when I start to "play" all bets are off.
