Default Cast Away (Mark Hanson) on Edwinson Zephyr 00

Hi There,

Here's my rendition of Mark Hanson's Cast Away. This is one of his original compositions that is part of his Art of Solo Fingerstyle course. I love the vibe and happy mood of this song, it's fun to play. I used my Edwinson Zephyr 00 on this one (Adi/Cocobolo). Such a lovely guitar, very pleased I got it.

I think it came out pretty good other than my breathing and grunting is kind of there and (I laugh) I kind of hum (or grunt along) to a couple of measures about 2/3 through. It's raw artistry folks!

Techie notes were a KM184 SDC and Austrian Audio OC818 LDC setup in a spaced pair about 24" apart and 8"-10" from the guitar. The KM184 pointing at the neck junction and the OC818 aimed at the lower bout. Mics to Sebatron Axis mic preamp to Motu Mk V Ultralight interface to Reaper. I used the Sebatron HPF set at about 100 Hz. Post processing was some reverb via the Seventh Heaven Sunset Chamber reverb plug-in and mild compression using the Wave CLA-2 compressor plug-in.

Appreciate any constructive feedback, thanks for taking a listen.

Cheers,

Bob

Very good playing Bob! You're really advancing rapidly!

Excellent recording quality too!

One note -

Your recordings are better than mine, but this is just from a listener's point of view. I think the reverb is leaving little artifacts with some of the higher notes. Do you have the reverb on a bus/send? If so, maybe a low pass before the reverb on the send might help that? That might be a good question for the Recording section, I'm just brain storming on the fly.

Just excellent, Bob! Beautiful flow to this piece.....happy little tune....could be the theme song to Andy Griffith and Mayberry!

Wow, thanks for the compliments and feedback. So yes, I was sending my tracks to a reverb bus so I went back and inserted another bus with a LPF set at 10K hz. I sent both tracks to that bus and then that bus to the reverb bus and I think it cleaned up what you were pointing out. I re-posted this revision. This is so awesome.

Thanks again Barry, much appreciated.

Cheers,

Bob

Thanks Fred, that's too funny. When I first started this recording adventure, I think the red recording light was making me feel like Don Knotts in The Ghost and Mr. Chicken!

Very good job Bob. The tune has a Randy Newman feel to me. Boy Steve did a nice job on that little Zephyr for sure, it sounds great. Well done to the both of you.

I can hear the sun come out and shine in this sweet tune. Wonderful (and wonderfully played)! Thanks for sharing.

Nice! I can tell you put a lot of work into that one. Course' I have a vested interested on anything done on an Edwinson at the moment Thanks for posting.

It's really satisfying to get one down and recorded, isn't it?

Thanks James. I just need to get better at being more relaxed and calming down the breathing and small grunts. I do enjoy the challenge of creating an audience worthy recording. It's fun to do.

Thanks Tom. The Zephyr is a really nice guitar and Steve made it so easy to play. Can't wait to see and play what he and Joel bring to BIG. 5 weeks and counting!

Thanks Aimelie, such a nice compliment. Did you check out some Pat Metheny yet?

Wow! Bob!

What a great job on this! I just loved that happy sound and lovely sound of your acoustic guitar! Totally delightful!

I do hear some of your breathing and such, but those sounds make it real, as if we are in the room with you. I have a pile of Tommy Emmanuel recordings where you can hear him breathe or grunt or hum or whatever. It makes the whole thing organic.

I cannot believe how rapidly you have advanced on the guitar in such a short time. This sounds really good, pro-level! And your new equipment sounds terrific!

- Glenn
