Default Old men with wooden teeth...

Well, not really teeth...

I was talking with my luthier the other day about my new guitar (sitka/mahogany) and he said "Yeah, it seems that as guys get older they start leaning towards mahogany more than rosewood."

I thought to myself "I resemble that remark."

Do you notice this, too? And if so, why do you think that is?

I always assumed RW was better than mahogany because the RW guitars always cost more. But then I picked up a Larrivee SD-50 and I really dig the sound.
And yes, I'm "older."

That is funny. I have owned and played a RW/Spruce for over 35 years. I recently bought a D-18 and have played it pretty well exclusively for the last 8 mo. Probably more to do with my 60 something ears

I was all-in rosewood when I first started playing. In the last few years I’ve flipped to mahogany bigtime. But then I was already old when I started (63) and I’m almost 70 now...so I guess I don’t count.

This is me as well. I’ve often wondered with Martin doesn’t make a more “esthetically enriched” 18 type guitar....

My first real guitar was a Guild D 35. I didn’t know squat about guitars when I bought it but since learned it was mahogany. Then, same thing, my next couple guitars, which sounded great, were rosewood and cost more.

I have a 000-18 and love the sound of the mahogany.

I mainly prefer mahogany, but it's nice to have both flavors. On some guitars, the overtones, reverb and volume output of rosewood can be fatiguing to listen to for extended periods.

Makes sense to me. I’ve always felt like mahogany is the well-worn flannel blanket of guitar tonewoods. 18s are much more snuggly than 28s.

How about this theory: as you age you gradually lose those high frequencies that make rosewood trebles sound so good. And the scooped mids are such that you’re constantly asking the guitar to repeat itself. ‘Eh? What was that?’ All those false starts make your arthritis act up, and you think it’s the neck shape. So you keep swapping them out without even knowing what’s going on, and pretty soon it’s wild hogs.

I'm 74 and I still prefer Rosewood but I'm a big fan of mahogany as well. I think I hear mahogany better.

I am the opposite - Most of my acoustic life, Sitka/Mahogany. Now, I'm settling in to RW at 68 yoa

Sounds right to me. I've also switched from PB's to 80/20's

Going on 66 and I've always preferred spruce and mahogany. Indeed, my 11th guitar is expected tomorrow and is mahogany back and sides with spruce top - a 1973 Ibanez 754 which is a copy of the J-185 Everley Brothers, and from a period where Ibanez acoustics were stellar. The only change I'm likely to make is to replace the stupid adjustable bridge (2 screws, just like some Gibsons from late 60s and early 70s) with a fixed one and a tusc or bone saddle.

I own both. I tend to gravitate back and forth as one will sound better to me today but the other will tomorrow. And one maple just to stir things up a bit!

Not really. Since I was quite younger, I've always gravitated to mahogany-like guitars more than rosewood-like ones
