Outdoor bench # 2
Found this old hand painted plywood advertising sign in an antique shop garage in Pennsylvania that looked to be something from the 60's or 70's and was probably displayed at some type of athletic field. I'm guessing the various small town businesses had formed some kind of competitive league and this sign announced the various teams that participated. After trying to figure out what to do with it, I decided on cutting it in two and making the bench you see below. I marine varnished the whole thing to try and protect it from the elements and added a protective plastic trim around the sign that I painted black to match the bench. My wife gave it the vote of approval after initially being hesitant about the plan and I think it gives the area a bit of pizazz while still blending in with the surroundings pretty well.

Thanks folks - I do appreciate the kind words. And yes, it is indeed sturdy if nothing else - probably capable of sitting quite still in a hurricane.

Looks great. However, the back-rest is 2 pieces. I see no support in the center of the stained/painted frame. How did you support the two-piece back?

Steve, The original uncut sign was over 8 feet long. I cut it into 2 four foot pieces and used one of those 4 foot lengths to make the bench back rest. Given the thickness of the plywood I really didn't need a center back support. I'm not sure what I'm going to do with the other 4 foot section, but it will turn up somewhere at some time down the road.
