Tom Sands Model S in Mastergrade 'Moon Spruce' & Mastergrade Koa - Build Thread
Tom Sands Model S in Mastergrade 'Moon Spruce' & Mastergrade Koa
Tom Sands Guitars are in incredibly high demand, and it's definitely not hard to see why. With slick designs and the utmost attention to detail, his craftsmanship really is some of the best we've ever seen. This is the second guitar we currently have in build at Tom Sands Guitars, for another TNAG Customer. This guitar features one of the most beautiful sets of Mastergrade Koa we've had the pleasure of laying eyes upon, paired with a Mastergrade 'Moon Spruce' top. Koa is one of our favourite tonewoods, with its incomparable appearance, crisp clarity and warm, thick tone- we're really looking forward to seeing the outcome of this gorgeous Model S. Here's an in depth photo diary of the start to current process, keep an eye out as there's more to come. Body Style: Tom Sands Model S Scale Length: 24.75' Soundboard: Mastergrade 'Moon Spruce' Back & Sides: Mastergrade Koa Rosette: Sistine Blue Patinated Copper Binding: Madagascar Rosewood End Graft: Madagascar Rosewood Position Markers: Copper dots with blue infill Bridge: Madagascar Rosewood Bridge Pins: Ebony Saddle: Bone Nut Width: 1-3/4’ Neck: Mahogany Fingerboard: Madagascar Rosewood Backstrap: Dyed black maple Tuning Machines: Robson Standard Trussrod: Two-way Fretwire: Jescar Evo Gold Medium Fretboard Radius: 20’ Finish: Polyurethane Strings: Elixir HD lights Neck Heel Inlay: Sistine Blue Full Heel Cap Neck Depth at 1st Fret: 20mm Neck Depth at 9th Fret: 23mm Neck Profile: Medium C Routing the rosette. The client really loved the rosette on a Model L that was recently finished, and so we decided to go with the same type of patination process for the copper so it would return similar coloured results. We call this particular blue copper patination 'sistine blue' as it reminds us of Michaelangelo's famous frescos. Just trimming the soundhole reinforcement to perfection... Multiple rim assemblies on the bench. Utilising structured sides ensures the rim assemblies have a high stiffness to weight ratio; no energy is being lost on the sides moving, so maximum sound is generated. Shaping the back braces. They are made of spruce to again ensure the lightness of the guitar; this client enjoys a lighter built instrument. Our Koa is all ethically sourced by our good friends Elaine and Josh of Koa Guitar Sets.com. Josh is a third generation logger and visits Hawaii every year to source the finest Koa; but, only from already fallen trees, of course. |

Wonderful set of photos! That koa is scrumptious. I'm very excited to get the chance to meet Tom here in Texas this year, and possibly experience playing one of his guitars.
