Minutes ago I sprayed the 5th coat on this guitar. Mostly due to the fine nature of the Cuban, the finish has already achieved a near flawless surface. I could probably get this one done with just 6 rather than the usual 8 coats! I imagine I’ll go with 7 though as there is slightly more margin for error when I do the final sanding and buffing in a month or so.

Curious on the JB/2 fretboard. Any work on that yet?

The fretboard was made a couple of weeks ago and is glued to the neck, which can’t be shaped w/o it. I do not shape the playing surface or do the inlay or fret it until after the finish is cured and the neck has been glued to the body. It is only then that a surface can be created that is flawlessly lined up with the bridge and has the exactly correct relief. Many people, and all factories I am aware of, fret the fingerboard before before glueing it to the neck, but this makes no sense to me.

I have seen magazine advertisements paid for by Martin Guitars in which they say they are the only company doing what I described above and that it is one of their biggest advantages over the competition. The was about 100 years ago, and now they don’t want to talk about it. Understandable since that is no longer their method.

I expect to apply the 7th and final coat of Oil Varnish tomorrow morning. It won't looking better than this until a month from now when I block it flat and buff it. . . if then.

This guitar already has a flawless sprayed surface with these pics, a mix of 5 body coats and 6 neck coats:

Looks great Bruce, the "S" on the back of the headstock takes a little getting use to, threw me for a second...

I just had the image of Bruce saying, "Night, night little darling." as he tucks in the guitar for the month.
