Hi Bruce, we had a brief exchange in last year's thread about the merits of "the Tree" mahogany.
How would you characterize Cuban vs Tree strictly from a tonal perspective?

It is hard to compare Cuban to Tree as they are very different materials. Tree is quite hard but its wild grain makes it structurally weak and requires some thickness. Cuban is structurally superior and can be thinned more than even the best Honduran mahogany, let alone the tree. I will be able to compare my Tree 00 to this Cuban 0 in about 5 weeks. . . unless someone relieves my of the Tree 00. The 00 tone is unusually fat and smooth for a mahogany guitar. Very beautiful.

The bridal joint is absurd since I have to cut the headstock off a perfectly good one piece neck to create it. But it is traditional, challenging, functional, and uber-cool.

This Cuban is superior structurally to about any mahogany, and almost poreless. It also has some chatoyance which we won't really make out until finish goes on. I have seen only three Cuban mahogany guitars ever. One is the Schoenberg 000 I made just a few years back. I thought it was exceptional as it has great tonal complexity and stellar projection without being at all rosewood-like. The other two were both by Kim Walker, and were guitars I would have been proud to have had my headstock on. One of those changed hands recently for 24k British pounds if I am not mistaken. Maybe it was Euros.

I spent the day on cutting and installing a torch. Not just any torch, this one has been skewed to match the asymmetry of the headstock. Now I have to do the same thing with my "S" which will go on the back of the headstock. Then the heel cap (found the edit button) and the guitar goes into finish.

No need for being sorry. Happens to me regularly, especially from folks in foreign countries.

'hellcap" seems appropriate given the skew there. Just wondered if this was slip of the spellcheck or intentional. It should be intentional considering the exrta angle of the dangle there. Should have been some choice words on that skewed torch, too

This has been a challenge all the way around and I am sure there were some grumbles (if not choice words) uttered during the work. Even so, the heelcap would not have caused so much of an issue. I'm sure that is what Bruce meant to type.

For unknown (by me) reasons there is no edit button on the "hellcap" post so I will fill you in: I meant "heelcap". Just now spell check changed heelcap to hellcat, maybe next time I'll write heel cap. It never was a problem, I simply hadn't got to it yet. In case any thought it was HeadStock I meant, I assure you I loved making that part as it came out perfectly in all regards but one, and what that is is a secret, for now.

Drove thru Petaluma today and stopped long enough to get a look at this one - truly beautiful execution of the angled beak and torch, and the tap tone on this mahogany is outstanding. Can’t wait to see this with a little finish on it!
