I’ve had a few in my life. Totally exhilarating. It’s the drug that keeps performers performing.

Many years ago - just out of high school - I toured for eleven weeks with this country band, up and down the I-95 corridor on the East Coast of the US. Everyone else was at least ten years older than me and top, TOP shelf players. I can't even begin to tell you how much I learned as their lead guitar player. Talk about being thrown into the deep end of the pool!!

One day we walked into this club where I noticed the entire stage was surrounded in chicken wire. I turned to Donnie - the pedal steel player - and asked him what's up with this. He said "That's called the cage. If the crowd likes the band they'll wind up throwing empty beer bottles at us. If they don't they'll throw HALF empty bottles at us."

Needless to say we never got wet in those types of clubs and the further south we traveled the more of those clubs appeared. THAT I would guess would qualify as a standing ovation, yes?

for music..its been a while since i performed in front of a large group

for food, my catering division receive standing ovations weekly ( 2 ovations at one event last weekend)

in my seminar and speaking days going back 20 + years i would speak in front of groups of 1000 to 6000 and received many standing ovations throughout canada, US and South America.

not the ovations you were referring to in the post, but still hold the same effect
& impact on performer/speaker or service provider

With the second band I was ever in ('77-78) if we didn't get a standing ovation (more like screaming, fist pumping ovation) we figured something was wrong. We played hard rock, cover and original, as if it was the last thing we would ever do. But we were almost entirely ignorant about anything to do with show biz, being 18-20 yrs. old. We just figured when you jammed hard rock like you really mean it that is the way an audience will react. We still didn't catch on when both music critics from the city papers visited us backstage to tell us we were "on the way." No. We had not a clue about the sound we made on the audience side of the mic, the excitement we engendered just playing our thing, or the chemistry we had together. Very quickly the party became the focal point of our efforts and our "chemistry" took on a whole different angle. In a bit less than a year the drink and drugs had hospitalized two of us and we were done.

It would be 23 yrs. before I played with another band that could induce a standing ovation, and a polite one at that. But I have never come close again to what that hard rock band could do to an audience and never will.

And no regrets! It was a magic time I recall fondly, and no one's fault but ours that we didn't recognize the value of what had been put on our plate at the time.

If you only play very few gigs, and those few gigs have no chairs, then every clap is a standing ovation.

May, 1970 Boston, Mass.....our folk group, "The Sandy Hill Exchange" open for the Sha Na Na!
Long story short.....the Sha Na Na's equipment van broke down and so the boys are there, but no "stuff"! About 2,500 folks now waiting for the main act and it's not happening!! And, they are NOT happy.

To quell the troops, the staff start handing out free beer. ( you could legally do that way back in the day) Finally equipment arrives and things are underway....we're nervous, the crowd is "lit" and they want the main act. But they have to hear us first.....and they're NOT happy!! And they promptly let us know this as we walk out there to start things off.

Unreal feeling going onto that stage....like some kind of sacrifice to the lions or something. BUT, we won them over to a standing ovation! It was amazing....and their manager wanted to handle us and made a pitch after we left the stage. All in all a highlight life memory. We'd had a few standing O's but this was the one to remember!

Did you by any chance run into a bouncer called Dalton?

I've never had a standing ovation. But, I had someone ask me for my autograph. She was about 9 years old. After a few minutes she came back and asked if I would do one for her friend who was too shy to ask. I was playing in a duo. My friend told me, "Gee, they didn't ask me?" I said, "Sorry, maybe one day it will happen for you"

I played and sang in a school talent show back in 7th grade. Girls SCREEMED.

(I've been trying to get back to that place ever since.)
