Default Did you ever get a standing ovation?

I did. In the very early 1970s I was getting my first onstage experience in coffeehouses in Tucson and Bisbee, Arizona. One of my favorite places to set up and play was an on-campus cafeteria at the University of Arizona in Tucson. On days I wanted to play a set, I would go to an office where they kept the mics and stands, check them out, and I would take them over to the stage, set up everything, pull out my trusty ol’ B-25 and play some one four five relative minor tunes.

One day, I finished my set and this other guy walked up with a guitar, nodded at me knowingly, and started playing. Not to be mean, but he couldn’t play himself out of a wet paper bag. I let him do a couple of tunes, but I needed to head out and had to turn in the U of A’s equipment that I had checked out - so I walked up and told him “Sorry, but I need to take this stuff back to the office”. He stomped off after a short temper-tantrum, and suddenly there it was - my first and only standing ovation. The University lunch crowd appreciated me for shutting the poor guy down -

About 5 years ago, my duo partner and I got to open for Sheryl Crow. About 5,000 in the audience. We got a standing ovation. Ok,it was probably for my singer, but I make her sound good. Lolol

Not sure if It counts, but I wrote a song almost 10yrs ago. I played it for a neighbor, when I was done she asked if I could play it again "just like that?" I said yeah sure. She walked out, went home and got everyone she could rustle up and ultimately we all listened to it again.

Since I've been publicly performing at various levels in various types of ensembles for the past almost 50 years, yes of course. When it happens it's because of how I/we made the audience feel, not necessarily how well I/we played.

IMO it doesn't count as much if most of the audience is buzzed/drunk....

I got a few back in the day, but the most memorable was playing to a packed house at the Grand Ol' Opry in 1985. We played 2 shows that night. I played a lot of fiddle back when I was young and we ended our set with me playing Orange Blossom Special on the fiddle. One of Elvis' old back up singers from The Jordanaires introduced us, and in the 2nd show said, "You're gonna really like this fiddle player." We played it thru 3 times: Fast, Faster, and Really Fast. The crowd went nuts when we finished. BTW, the sound in the venue was the best I've ever experienced.

Maybe I should get that fiddle off the wall and brush up on it.

Played in a “battle of the bands” with a makeshift bunch of guys in Dallas at the House of Blues. Everybody was already standing and they applauded when we were done.

Every couple of years (before the Great Interruption) I was in a project band that consisted of college faculty and staff. We did a program for the students, who were a great audience - standing ovation with the cell-phones aglowin'.

Never "standing," but four times back in my R&R band days I received a round of applause mid-song after a solo.

I remember each of them fondly.

Well, not sure if this counts..... They were making lots of noise (could be mistaken for applause), moving towards me (upright), and breaking the ends of bottles....

We've never had a standing ovation but we did once move an audience to tears...which I take as a massive compliment. Can't take credit for the song though, that goes to the wonderful Avett Brothers and the tearjerker No Hard Feelings...
