First chord you play? (Officially the dumbest question ever.)
Yes, it's another dumb and meaningless discussion question! But these can be fun.
When you pick up your guitar to play, you don't typically go right into a song, do you? I know I don't. I play a few warmup chords first, listen for whether I need to tune, etc. So if you do this, what chord do you automatically start with? For me it's four-fingered open G. My fingers just seem to go to that position. I suppose we could also ask the question that some of you expected, namely what was the first chord you ever learned? Mine was one-finger Em7. |

Yeah, me too. Dunno why, it's maybe the richest 1st position chord.
I see myself doung this in my videos and it embarrasses me.

Not the dumbest question ever here but one that's been asked and answered a few times before.

I go to the Am. It is magical to me. It adds suspense, doom, earie-ness. Thats what I hear anyways.
First chord? Plain Jane ol Em. I like Em in songs, but it’s not quite packing what the Am brings.

First position E9, and I let it ring out. Gives me a good idea of the personality of a given guitar.

Either a G or an Em, depending on what kind of mood I'm in... or what I'm expecting from the guitar.

If I am performing it is a G.
In order to hear the temperament tuning of the low E string. Otherwise it is various. |

It's unpredictable in my case. Sometimes I'll play a chord, sometimes a single note line, sometimes double stops or triads, and sometimes I'll launch right into a song. If the latter, it will still begin with a chord, a single note line, or double stops or triads.

F major barre chord on the 1st fret.
I hurt my hand many times working construction and Fmaj was always the one that hurt. Now I finally got it healed right, 10 years later and after I warm my hands up (pre-fretboard) I hit that chord to see if it's going to be a good day. Usually it is lately!!

G all the way!! Especially if a new guitar. I can immediately tell if I need to continue with it or not.

Depends on what's playing in my head on a given day. Major or minor strums on D, G, E, A just to see if the guitar is in tune,
At times when I'm in cover bands, I'll go grab a guitar in the house and plow right into the intro of something new on the set list - just to get used to jumping into it cold onstage. More acrobatic stuff, for me anyway (like the intro to Castles Made of Sand), will require warmed up, functional hands before I attempt. Last edited by tinnitus; 12-23-2019 at 10:31 PM. |
