That would be a great pick. I also like the Emmylou L-200 but shame they discontinued it long ago.

The only thing I would add is DO play it first. J-200's are notoroiusly inconsistent in tone quality, even though they all look stunning.

Usually disappointing. I believe that the design is inherently flawed sonically.

Did someone forget to tell The Reverend you couldn't finger pick on one?

If you play as strong as Davis did, with fingerpicks, you could play a rake.

The SJ-200 has a unique sound, but due to Gibson's reputation for great variation in sound in guitars of the same model, I would definitely play it before I bought it.

Yeah, you NEED one.

I hope you get a good one. Spending large money on a guitar that sucks is a real downer.

P.S. and OBTW: Reverend Gary Davis (at least) once commented that the reason why he bought a J-200 was that it was the best guitar for playing in the rain.

Most of the recent SJ-200's are acoustic-electric guitars. Would you want one with electronics? If so, the non-amplified sound might not be so important.

Noticed this weight difference between the two Sweetwater has right now. Is it normal for guitars to have this much weight variation, I wonder?

The heavier one has a prettier back and sides...

Nope. I will however advise that you not buy one unless you play it first and love it. The best J-200's I've played in the past year are the Montana SJ-200 Deluxe Rosewood Burst.

Wanted to give a big warm thanks to everyone who helped me on this thread! Finally sold off some other guitars (and an exercise bike) and ordered up this guy. 1998 Elite J200. Wish me luck!
