A Mackie Freeplay can be bought from Mackie itself, refurbished on eBay, for around $190, after best offer wrangling. For the price, this seems to be best FX capable battery powered option.

Battery life on that Yamaha is horrible. Tried to use might at a campfire one night. Forget how. Short it was, but it wasn’t worth trying.

I agree it's pretty bad. I always run mine from rechargeable NiMH batteries, and I think I get a few hours. In comparison, my Cube Street EX, which also use 8 AA batteries, "run forever" from the same batteries ( at least on Eco mode which is 10 W). Soundwise, the THR5A is simply fantastic though, I especially love the Tube setting.

Appreciate all the info here. The Acoustic Brand looks like it fits the bill for what I want. It's just for messing around at home so I don't need much and no sense in paying much. I'm also toying with getting an electric to play too so - just another reason.

I'm 45 minutes away. Have a good condition AG30 listed on Youngstown CL for $60. Could meet today.

Once in the cart it was $70 and change, hoping it will suit my needs

If you want to go the super-cheap route, look for a practice bass amp that has a tweeter. They are generally pretty good for full-range instruments, like acoustic guitar and keyboard. I've used my little 15-watt Ibanez bass practice amp for my acoustic plugged-in at home, and while it's not the best fidelity, it's pretty good. Acoustic guitar amps, keyboard amps, and tweeter-equipped bass amps all tend to cover pretty wide frequency spectrums, so you can often use them interchangeably.

If you want a mic preamp in addition to the acoustic guitar, then you might need a little more money. If you decide to go for a battery, that will also cost you.
