Thanks, Carwashblues, for the interesting history behind the making of the Martin D-21 JCB Commemorative Jim Croce Model!

Carwashblues, what a great bit of history about that guitar, and insight into the very personal world of Martin. Thank you so much for your generosity and time to share it.
Jim Croce was one of my main motivations to learn guitar as a kid. |

He was an original. Can you think of anyone he copied?

Actually some of his early stuff with Ingrid has an Ian & Sylvia feel while early solo stuff seems like it's influenced by Gordon Lightfoot. Interestingly, bassist John Stockfish played with Lightfoot 1965-1969 and then moved to New York to play with Jim Croce...

I've got Jim's early albums including his home-brewed one. I've got to find them, though, to see exactly what I've got.

Hank Williams was influenced by Roy Acuff and Ernest Tubb but like Jim found his own style.😉 |

A custom yes that would apply but I'm pretty sure it doesn't apply for signature editions because they are a numbered edition.
You could get a D-21 but it won't have Croce's signature in mother of pearl inlay or the dime. |

My query was that at the time of commission, Martin didn’t mass produce 73 Brazilian rosewood guitars but built one at a time as ordered until the number 73 was reached, therefore, lefties could have been made if so ordered.

Jim Croce Lefty
I actually own a Croce lefty. Sits in its denim case since I bought it years ago. I had read somewhere that there were possibly two that existed but I have never been able to confirm that. I will post pictures if I can find the time.

Interesting story. It’s amazing how guitars get out in the world for people to play. You tend to think it’s all logical and methodical, and then find out that it’s much more haphazard than that. I once ordered a custom Martin online from a well known dealer. When it arrived I opened it up and the inner Martin box had an official Martin label on it that said “Robbie Robertson 00-42 Prototype”. I of course immediately wondered “what the heck did I just get?” Inside was the hardshell case containing the guitar I actually ordered. It seems that either Martin or the dealer, or more likely both, were just reusing that outer box. I’ve always wondered what that proto 00-42 looked like. I still have the label somewhere.
