GHS Vintage Bronze are nice strings - warm and clear.

I don't respond well to mellow, you know what I mean, I have a tendency to... if I get too mellow, I ripen and then rot. Woody Allen

And there lies the problem: steel is steel.

I have those with my Ovation Ultra 2178. And the tone is exactly what you wrote: warm and, at the same time, clear and well defined.

Not really a problem, if you ask me.

More mellow than monels? Yep, that can be done. I have a box where I collect my worn-out, oxidized strings for recycling. Happy to part with it if you cover shipping cost.

In comparison to Retro the gauges are somewhat different depending on the set. The retro 12 set has a 54 low E string while the Newtone Masterclass has a 52, while Retro A and D strings are 41 and 31, Newtone 42 and 32. I really liked the Newtone roundcore PBs BUT they seemed to go dead really quickly. I hadnt noticed it until i played a few Retro fitted (!) Guitars and decided to give the Retros another shot on my Martin OM. Well, the guitar came to life and they are staying. However, the 54 low E seems a tad too thick and i might replace it with a 52 from the 011 set which carry the same gauge A and D while the G drops from 25 to 23! All in all some food for thought.. |
