Default And So It Goes by Billy Joel (cover)

This is my version of Billy Joel's great song, "And So It Goes." He played this on the piano in the key of C. I transposed this to the key of G for the guitar and tried the capo on fret 5 (which would still be in the key of C), but I found I preferred to sing this a couple of semi-tones higher (key of D), which put the capo on the 7th fret. Billy Joel has an excellent vocal range, so he could have easily sung this song in D or higher. I'm sure he had a reason for pitching this song where he did. But for me, this song had a little more life a tweak higher.

Changing to the key of D (or G at the 7th fret) made the song a little harder for me to play since there is less room for my fingers that far up the neck. But I liked how easily the voicings for this song fit into the key of G on the guitar.

I originally worked out the voicings on my Olson SJ, but I found I just didn't have enough room. This morning I tried my Sheppard GA guitar for this piece because it has an unusually wide fretboard and this gave me just a little more room for my fingers and allowed me to get a more reliable recording. I still had to practice this a lot to keep from messing up all the Esus4 chords, where I have to stuff 3 fingers in between the fret wire.

I started out with lyrics and chords from ultimateguitar.com, but I eventually abandoned many of those chords and made my own arrangement as I played along with Billy Joel's original recording. I probably have taken a few liberties, but... for me this worked.

I hope you like this -- thanks so much for listening!

- Glenn

Always loved this tune, your Sheppard sounds every bit as glorious as it looks man!

This is just spectacular on every level, Glenn. Wonderful arrangement, your voice is perfect for the song, your playing is precise, the guitar looks and sounds top notch. I know your Olson is a great guitar, but that Sheppard really shines here.

Cheers!

Hi Dustin!

It's so nice to receive your comments when I know very well that you have some gorgeous guitars as well! I am so glad you like this. And I must agree with you that Gerald Sheppard is not only an artist in terms of his inlay work, but he also knows how to ring every last overtone out of a guitar. I feel very fortunate.

And I, too, have always loved this song, so I feel very fortunate to have come up with an arrangement that was workable for me.

Thanks so much for your comments Dustin!

Hi Paul!

Your comments have really made my day, Paul! "Spectacular" is such a generous word -- Thank you!

You know, the use of the Sheppard on this song was kind of an accident. I just needed more room for my fingers and it wasn't working reliably well on my Olson with my particular fingers. So when I tried out the Sheppard on this today, I was delighted to hear how this guitar sounded way up there on the 7th fret! In the end, I have to give Gerald Sheppard a whole lot of credit for creating this guitar.

That was another piece of luck, that is, acquiring this Sheppard. One of the fellows on the forum from Portland, OR, Billy Boy, had this guitar built for him, I met him at an AGF gathering a few years ago, and then he called me and asked me if I might be interesting in buying this guitar because he had other commitments on other guitars that were being built. So while this guitar was expensive, it was less expensive as a used guitar. So -- another piece of luck!

Thanks so much for your comments, Paul!

Thank you Jake!

I'm glad to read that you have a bright morning to enjoy! My morning in western Washington is pretty gloomy. But that's okay -- I am used to clouds!

Hope you are well!
