Default buttons and nuts

Two questions....the buttons that are on classical guitar tuners, are they glued on and if so is heat the way to get them off? Nuts...I thought I remember reading that it is not necessary to glue them in, that the string tension is enough to keep them in place. thanks. Jeff B

Sam: If the nut is captured by the headplate and the end of the fingerboard there is no need to glue the nut. A bit of a trick to make sure of a tight fit. With dial calipers measure the width of the slot. It will almost certainly have a bit of taper,.001" or.002" . Fit the nut so that it slides in from the wide side of the slot. Work slow and use fine paper, 400 grit or so. You can make it so that the nut requires a bit of a tap to take it back out. The nut will be as solid as a rock and no glue.
